Creating a Legacy through Partnership

We are delighted to be working with Legacy Futures on our upcoming mentoring programme for 2024/25!

Our mentoring programme is for fundraising leaders from any discipline who want to take the next steps on their leadership journey. But in our conversations with Legacy Futures we identified that there is no clear pathway for legacy and in-memory fundraisers to progress into more senior positions, and many feel they need to move away from legacies to further their careers. And so our partnership with the fantastic team at Legacy Futures began! 

With support and sponsorship from Legacy Futures, we will be offering at least 2 mentee places specifically to mentees from the legacy fundraising sector in our 2024/25 cohort. AND all of our participants in the programme will be able to benefit from increased knowledge and expertise in the legacy and in-memory giving markets, as a number of Legacy Futures’ experts join our programme as mentors.

This collaboration supersedes Legacy Futures’ previous Future Leaders Bursary Award and now provides 12 months of free mentoring instead of 6. Successful applicants will be placed on The Elischer Foundation’s existing mentoring programme, which supports committed and ambitious fundraisers in achieving great impact in their careers and across the sector as a whole.

But don’t just take our word for the impact that this kind of mentoring can have – here Abbie Barton, a previous Legacy Futures ‘Future Leaders Bursary Award’ winner, shares her thoughts on what mentoring has meant for her career:

I was mentored by three leading experts: Ashley Rowthorn, CEO of Legacy Futures, Dr Claire Routley, Head of Consultancy and Kate Jenkinson, Head of In-memory Consultancy. I was really pleased that in-memory played a part in the programme. Sometimes in-memory gets forgotten about or pushed from team to team, so it was great to have it included. 

We had a session once a month along with fellow mentee Nikita Ghandi. At the beginning, the mentors liaised with us to ask whether the topics they planned to cover would be useful and relevant and asked if there were any other areas we’d specifically like to cover. It was great to have that input. I still keep in touch with the mentors now and know that if I have a question, they’re there to support me, even now the programme has finished. 

The mentorship I received gave me a lot more confidence and knowledge around legacies and the process of legacies. It empowered me to want to try new things but also push back if something in a campaign didn’t feel quite right. I really enjoy training people, passing knowledge on and seeing others grow and develop. The mentorship helped form my own development, which in turn allowed me to pass more on. As a leader, this is something I really value.
